The Trouble With Traditional Prospecting

Is your business relying on luck or strategy?  The answer may not be what you think.

If you're at all like me, then when you first started network marketing you were engaged in "push marketing".

This is the traditional "talk to everyone you know and everyone you meet" strategy that most uplines teach their new recruits.

They say that your job is not selling. It's just sharing.

Go out and share the business with your friends and family and some of them, they tell you, will see the value in it and join you in your business.

You must know 3 people who need more time and financial freedom, they ask you. Right? 3 people. No big deal. Then you just help them find 3 people as well. That's the brilliance of leverage: just get 3 who get 3 who get 3.... and soon you'll have an army!

Well, you do that and you burn through your warm market and you don't get 3 people. You get a whole lot of rejection.​

Or maybe you do get 3 people, or 5 people, or 10 people (at this point, you're well on your way to becoming a millionaire, right?) but they quickly fizzle out.

No big deal. Once you run out of your "warm market", it's time to start cold market prospecting.

The strategy here is the same: just share the products and the business.

So you go out to coffee shops and hand out business cards.

You compliment the cashier at the grocery store and tell her that you're building a health and wellness business (or a travel business, or a beauty business, or whatever) and you think she would be an excellent addition.

Or you ask your waitress if this is what she does full time. She tells you that she's working here to pay for school.

"Do you love it?" You ask. She shrugs. "It pays the bills."

"I run a health and wellness business (or a travel business, or a beauty business, or whatever) and it allows me to work from home on my hours. Is that something you think you might like to learn, instead of working for someone else on their terms?" You ask.

She takes your card and never calls you.

Or, if your upline taught you well, you get her number and set up a meeting.

Maybe she even shows up and listens eagerly.

But she has doubts. You address them.

She's concerned about cost. You show her how starting her own business (which could earn her hundreds of thousands of dollars) can cost less than purchasing a new laptop.

If you do this often enough, you will eventually get some team members. But chances are, even your rock stars will fizzle out as they meet rejection after rejection from their warm market and from their cold market.

Playing the "numbers game" is an uphill battle and one that is exhausting and ineffective.

I know. I was one of those rock star recruits who threw multiple home parties each month. I called EVERYONE I knew and asked them to attend a party, or watch a video, or meet for a business presentation.

When I burned through my warm market with little success (I got 2 team members who didn't take any action), I started cold prospecting. I sat in coffee shops and handed out business cards. I talked to cashiers about time and financial freedom. I even prospected other moms in the park while my kids played on the slide.

And I totally failed at it. I totally failed at it because pushing your products and your business onto everyone who'll listen is a terrible strategy. Why is it a terrible strategy?

The Downside of Traditional Prospecting

  1. You are relying on luck, not actual strategy. Even if you have a great business pitch and you've mastered all the scripts, it is still a matter of finding the right person at the right time. There's no way to determine at the outset where your "hot prospects" are, and there's no way to diagnose and fix any failures in your method.
  2. It's exhausting. You have to be always on. I got to the point where I would carry samples with me all the time and I was always looking for a way to turn conversations towards my business.
  3. It's ineffective.  Let's say you can "close" 10% of your prospects at any given stage of your prospecting "funnel". You talk to 10 people. 1 of them agrees to sit down for a business presentation. Of 10 who listen to a business presentation, 1 agrees to join. Of 10 who join, 1 actually builds a team. Of 10 who build a team, 1 is a total rock star, sticks around and is a long term member. With these optimistic numbers, you need to talk to 10,000 people to get 1 rock star team member. 10,000 people = 1,000 give you some time = 100 join = 10 build a team = 1 sticks around.

    That, my friend, is the fundamental problem with "push marketing". You need to push your products and business onto a TON of people to get any momentum.

    ​How do you do this?

    By creating a digital "warm list" of people who like, know, and trust you.  Just like your 100-person list in so-called 'real life'.  

    Only the difference with your digital warm list is that this is a list of people who have ALREADY expressed interest in your products or your business and have said "Yes, I want to learn more".
